Assignment.1- Dixon Hord

I can remember as a child my mom reading books to me almost every night. She is a first grade teacher so many times she would read books to me that she had been using in her classroom. My mom would always read a book to me before I would go to sleep at night. The Dr. Seuss books were the main books that she read to me when I was little. I always enjoyed the Dr. Seuss books when I was little. My mom would make the story "come to life." I always loved to read books when I was a child. In elementary school we were required to read many different types of books. Also, we had to have a certain amount of accelerated reader points. My elementary school teachers would usually read the books to the class. However, when I got into fifth grade we had to read many chapter books on our own at home. I didn't have a favorite book when I was a kid. I just enjoyed reading the Dr. Seuss series. I enjoyed reading books a lot more when I was younger. As time has gone on I don't read books for fun as much as I used to. However, if someone suggests a book that I might enjoy then I will try to make some time to read it.

  1. Dixon, I'm glad you have so many warm memories of your mom reading to you each evening. Reading aloud to young children is one of the most beneficial things a parent can do; it results in all sorts of later academic gains. Plus, it provides the types of memories you describe. I'm sure your mom understood this.

  3. My mother and yours seem to have a few things in common! Mine used to be a first grade teacher but is now in second. She would also bring home books from her classroom for me to read. I also enjoyed the Dr. Seuss books! He has always been one of my favorite children's authors. I actually have a huge book full of his stories. I have cherished this book since I received it and have plans to use it in my classroom.

  4. My school had a system kind of like accelerated reader but it was called reading counts. We got points and got to choose between different things depending on how many points we had. We could choose from books, trips, or pizza parties!

  5. My mom was a pre-school teacher and she really mastered doing fun voices to make a story come to life! I had an accelerated reader too, I loved being able to pick out what I read for school. Having a choice really helped me to enjoy reading more.

  6. I did some community service at my elementary school last summer and I can remember the teachers reading to the children, just like you said your mom did. The teachers would do many voices and make the story with no pictures come to life in the minds of each child. Often after the teacher would finish reading she would ask the kids to describe the different charaters from the story. I remember being amazed at all the different discriptions the children would give. The fact that one teacher could bring to life one story through so many different ways in these childrens minds was so cool to see and be appart of!

  7. I loved it when my mom or grandma would read me books. They read to me a lot and helped me learn to read before I even entered school. I think it's great when parents or grandparents take time to read to their children. It sparks interest in reading at an early age. I love reading to my younger cousins and they like it about as much as I do.
