Winn-Dixie

I live in Naomi
I met my best friend at the Winn-Dixie grocery store
I made a big mess there, the employees were angry
But I met my best friend Opal that day
I was her first friend in Naomi
I am Winn-Dixie

I did not have a home
I was an orphan
But I was found by Opal
I was known as a “less fortunate”
I am Winn-Dixie

I am a big, ugly dog
But I am happy
I love to smile and wag my tail
I love new friends and my new home
I am Winn-Dixie

Moses Poem
My mind is made up, Tomorrow I flee.
Running through the swamp, her heart pounding.
Lord, I can’t make it out alone
Harriett walks till her legs ache,
Lord I miss my folks..

Harriet, your father taught you well,
use his lessons to be free.
You will meet again.

Harriett’s feet bleed & her gut churns.
Mosquitoes buzz in her ear, she rises & moves on.
Lord, make me strong, help me fight.
How far, Lord?

Harriett about to drop, on the last leg of her journey.
She reaches the Promised Land, Philadelphia.
Where slavery is a sin.
Is this heaven, Lord?

Harriett, be the Moses of your People.
I have blessed you with a strong body and a clever mind.
Save all you can daughter.

Assignment.2 Cameron Kluttz

When I think of a "good book" I automatically think of any of the Eric Carle books. I really loved reading all of his books when I was younger and to this day I really love looking back through all of them. I actually introduced myself as "The Hungry Caterpillar" the other day in class because it is for sure one of my favorites! I think all of his books are considered "good" because of how creative he is as an author and illustrator. I loved all the drawings and art work in the Hungry Caterpillar book and the lights in the back of the book of the Lonely Firefly. Also each book taught a lesson or moral through out the story. But overall I mostly enjoyed all the interactions each book had, the lights or the cricket noises, Eric Carle is a really great author.

Assignment.1 Cameron Kluttz

When I was really young my parents would read all sorts of Disney books for kids and then went on to the Eric Carle books like The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Very Busy Spider, and the Very Lonely Firefly. My parents both read to me very often at nights sitting on the couch before bed, I enjoyed that more then laying in bed. I did a lot of reading at First Wesleyan-starting in Pre-K with Ms. Lawing and then Mrs. Lynn in Kindergarten, I look up to both of those teacher to this day.
I am not sure of my favorite books-my guess would be one of the Eric Carle books. I feel like I enjoyed being read to over me reading on my own. When I was at First Wesleyan the attitude was more "read as many pages as you can" which really did not make me enjoy reading. At that point, they were more concerned with sounding out words and being able to read and pronounce things correctly. There was very little emphasis placed on comprehension and understanding what you were reading so that did not make it much fun for me. By the time my brother hit kindergarten, they were at the stage of less words and more pictures with answers at the end which made him enjoy it a lot more.
As far as a book making a difference in my life, I would have to say all the readings I did in the Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul were wonderful. I also really enjoyed reading Night about the Holocaust and a few others through out high school. And yes, now I do enjoy reading for pleasure, I am currently reading Love the One Your With.
