Assignment.2 Cameron Kluttz

When I think of a "good book" I automatically think of any of the Eric Carle books. I really loved reading all of his books when I was younger and to this day I really love looking back through all of them. I actually introduced myself as "The Hungry Caterpillar" the other day in class because it is for sure one of my favorites! I think all of his books are considered "good" because of how creative he is as an author and illustrator. I loved all the drawings and art work in the Hungry Caterpillar book and the lights in the back of the book of the Lonely Firefly. Also each book taught a lesson or moral through out the story. But overall I mostly enjoyed all the interactions each book had, the lights or the cricket noises, Eric Carle is a really great author.

A Good Book

After our discussion in class I feel that even though my book "Clara Barton" was a Biography it was still a quote "GOOD BOOK." I think that it achieved this good book appearance by covering most of the aspects I believe to be in a good book! It was informative, interestingly wrote, had great pictures to go along with the facts/story, as well as be easy to read. I also feel that it appealed to most every age, because even for me I could have used this to write a informative paper or story on Clara Bartons life. Above all this book is very interesting, creative and quick read, full of information that children would love to learn and tell others about!

Lauren Ashley Assignment 2

After reading our text and having class discussions, I believe Curious George by Margret and Hary is a "good" book. Curious George is a book series that has George the monkey traveling and going on many everyday life adventures.In our reading good books expand awarness and take children into other peoples perspectives and give them an understanding of the world. Curious George books envolve this in every way. For example George goes to the hospital, George goes to the zoo. These books are teaching children about every day life. Also good books tell the truth, and the characters are real life and the moral of the story is accurate and wise. A good book to me captivates the reader, entertains them and teaches them a lesson. I think Curious George does all the above and is a fun educational read!

A Good Book - Sarah Cobb

A good book for children is A Mother for Choco by Keiko Kasza. I think this is a good book because it has a good story. It has language that even young children can understand. It provides the reader with the feeling of many different emotions, which I find to be a quality of a good book. The illustrations are very colorful and really draw in the children. Not only is it an enjoyable book to read but it is also enjoyable to look at. I think this is a good book for young children as well as older ones.

Assignment 2, Nicolette Lovell

As an elementary school student, I loved all types of books but was particulary drawn to science fiction novels. My personal favorite that I've read too many times to count is Madeleine L'Engle's Newbery Award winning work A Wrinkle In Time. I loved the idea of travelling through time and across the universe. I think that a good book draws one into the world it portrays, it offers an escape from life's complications and allows the reader to become the character that they identify with and come to know and love at the end of the story. For me, A Wrinkle In Time was a chance for me join Meg, Calvin, and Charles Wallace on their adventure to save Meg and Charles Wallace's father as they travelled by way of the tesseract away from earth and time. I also think that a good book stays with its reader, and is a story that they can carry with them for their entire life. A Wrinkle In Time is one of those special books for me and will remain on my bookshelf for the rest of my life.

Good Book

When thinking back to my childhood, it was hard for me to pick just one good book but I finally decided on one. A book I believe to be great is Jan Brett’s Town Mouse Country Mouse. This book has received no awards but growing awards did not matter much to me. I have always believed a good book tells a story which captivates the reader and makes you feel what the character is feeling. Town Mouse Country Mouse does this. As a reader, I am worried when Town Mouse is caught in a storm and I am relieved when Country Mouse escapes the mouse trap. A good children’s book has beautiful pictures where you can see what you are reading. In this book Jan Brett does a wonderful job in her illustrations. My favorite illustration is where the mice are back in their homes, safe at last. A good children’s book has a moral but it is not shoved upon you. The moral of this story is the grass is not always greener on the other side. Town and Country mouse have to switch lives with each other before they can realize this, but hopefully by reading this, a child will not have to go thru what the mice did to realize their lives could be worse.

A Good Book

I think a good book is one that draws you in so much that you can’t put it down; you want to keep reading to find out what happens. Coraline, by Neil Gaiman, fits this qualification. At first, I thought the book was kind of boring. It was slightly confusing, but everything was explained as the story unfolded. In the book, Coraline gets bored one day and explores the new flat her family has moved into. She finds a locked door in a room she’s not supposed to be in. She gets the key and enters an alternate universe through the door. She finds that this other world looks almost exactly like her own world, except that in this world her “other” mother gives her everything she could ever want. This magical world offers her new worlds to explore that constantly change and a room with toys that are interactive. Everything seems wonderful on the outside, but then her other mother puts her in “time out” in a dark closet and Coraline discovers her nasty secret. Her seemingly wonderful other mother had hidden her real parents and had plans to keep Coraline in this alternate world forever and eventually suck out her soul. Coraline made a plan to trick the other mother into letting her go and giving her parents back. Once Coraline is safely home, she realizes that she is happy with her life just the way it is and she didn’t like always getting what she wanted.

This book has a moral, but doesn’t actually say “the moral of this story is…” It reveals the moral as part of the story and therefore raises awareness but doesn’t make the book feel like it’s “teaching” you. The book is also very original. It allows kids to use their imaginations and form a picture of this other world in their minds. Coraline sucked me in without my even realizing it. One day I was just reading it, then all of a sudden I couldn’t put it down! I just had to know what was going to happen to this little girl.
