The greatest book ever.
"Sideways stories, from Wayside school" though the title may be a tongue twister, the stories with in it are not, in fact they are just the right level for children and adults alike to enjoy. It doesn't have one overall theme, but is a good overall book because it meets many other qualities. First off it doesn't have complex language, other than a few silly Dr. Susses words it is your basic 3rd to 4th grade reading level. Some could say that this book is good but too humorous for children to get knowledge out of, in fact they would be wrong. This book could help some children see that they arent the only one who are embarrassed in school, by characters such as Red that get toilet paper stuck on their shoe and then called out in front of the whole class by the teacher. In saying this its not overly moralized, its not another boring "Oh yay, you did the right thing." The book may not be telling the truth, but its fiction, and in fact its just emphasizing the everyday American school kid. So maybe the truth isn't too far away after all. The uniqueness of this book is what made it stick out to me. Not many children s books can satisfy both children humor and adult humor, Sachar did this with ease. The book mostly stood out to me because it was an easy read, that caught my attention. Sachar does a great job at writing so that you have a visual of what exactly is going on as if you were there. Aside from the few pictures, it was easy to relate with who each character was. Sideways stories has done its job in fitting the characteristics of a good book, not only has it met the standards of the textbook, but it met mine as well, i became fully intwined in this book and have read it several times. I would reccomend it to anyone in need of a good laugh and easy read, no matter what their age may be.

I love books that have the ability to make you laugh out loud, they can seem to be so few and far between as we get older! I love to be drawn in like that. It is another rarity to find a book that can be read by several age groups and still enjoyed on the same level.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like Louis Sachar is the author of many "good" books. He is very talented and I think it is neat how he can write a book like the Sideways stories of the Wayside school and a novel with a completely different feel to it like Holes.
ReplyDeleteYou've made me want to read this book. I've always enjoyed books that I can relate to. In school I was always the kid getting embarrassed, so this would of been a great book to read. It is nice to know there are books out that don't tell me what I should do but let me know it's okay to mess up.
